Everything you need to know before visiting the Lençóis Maranhenses

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Lençóis Maranhenses?

The lagoons in the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park are formed by rainwater between January and June, reaching their fullest between May and August. This is the ideal time to visit, when the water is crystal clear and the dunes shine under the sun.

From September onward, many lagoons begin to dry out, revealing more desert-like landscapes. While still beautiful, it’s a different experience. For those who prefer kitesurfing or exploring the coast, the drier months can also be appealing.

How to Get There from São Luís

Most travelers reach the Lençóis Maranhenses through Barreirinhas, about 260 km from São Luís, the capital of Maranhão.

The trip takes around 4 to 5 hours by car or transfer service. There are three main options:

  • Shared vans or buses: The most affordable option, departing daily from São Luís or the airport.
  • Private transfers: More comfort and flexibility, especially for those arriving late or with luggage.
  • Rental cars: Offer freedom but are only practical up to Barreirinhas — cars are not allowed inside the park.

It’s possible to do a day trip from São Luís, but it’s not recommended. The long travel time limits how much you can see. Spending at least two nights in the region allows you to enjoy the park more calmly.

Travel Light and Be Prepared

Once inside the park, access is done in 4×4 vehicles, which can be quite expensive due to the sandy terrain and fuel consumption. Tours often last several hours, so comfort is essential. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water.

It’s best to travel light, as most routes involve boats or 4×4 transfers. Large suitcases are impractical on the sand. A backpack with essentials is all you need.

About the Lagoons

Each year, the lagoons in the Lençóis Maranhenses appear and disappear with the rain, meaning their names and locations change. Lagoa Bonita, Lagoa Azul, Lagoa da Esperança — all may look different or even vanish from one season to another. Don’t worry about chasing a specific one; the beauty lies in the ever-changing landscape.

Where to Stay

The main bases to explore the park are BarreirinhasAtins, and Santo Amaro.

  • Barreirinhas: The most accessible and offers a range of hotels and agencies.
  • Atins: A rustic coastal village ideal for kitesurfing and a quieter experience.
  • Santo Amaro: The closest to the park’s heart, offering direct access to some lagoons.

It’s essential to book accommodation in advance, especially between June and August, when tourism peaks. Many inns are small and fill up quickly.

Practical Tips Before You Go to Lençóis Maranhenses

  • Bring cash: Some villages have limited ATMs or card acceptance.
  • Book tours ahead: Park access requires guided visits.
  • Stay connected: Internet coverage is limited; download maps offline.
  • Respect nature: Swimming is allowed, but avoid sunscreen in the lagoons to protect the ecosystem.

Visiting the Lençóis Maranhenses is a journey into one of Brazil’s most extraordinary landscapes — a mix of sand, sky, and water that changes every season. With the right timing, preparation, and curiosity, you’ll find an experience unlike anywhere else in the world.
