Where to eat in Lençóis Maranhenses

Where to eat in Barreirinhas

Barreirinhas is the main gateway for those visiting Lençóis Maranhenses and also the place with the widest variety of restaurants — most of them located along the banks of the Preguiças River. The town combines the calm atmosphere of the countryside with the vibrant energy of tourism, resulting in a diverse and lively culinary scene.

Sertão

O Sertão is an excellent choice for those who want to taste traditional Northeastern Brazilian dishes, especially the peixada maranhense — yellow hake stewed with coconut milk, potatoes, and boiled eggs. The welcoming atmosphere and rustic decor reflect the essence of Maranhão’s culture in every detail.

Bambu

Located on the banks of the Preguiças River, Bambu is one of the most pleasant places in Barreirinhas for a relaxing lunch. The menu includes a variety of dishes featuring fish, seafood, and the classic carne de sol (sun-dried beef). We ordered the escondidão de carne seca, a creamy cassava purée filled with shredded sun-dried beef.

Bambaê

Bambaê is known for its good food and excellent structure. Also situated by the Preguiças River, it’s ideal for those looking for a more refined setting to enjoy a meal. We ordered pizza and macaxeira fritters stuffed with carne de sol — both delicious and well-prepared.

A Canoa

One of the city’s most traditional restaurants, A Canoa is a must-visit. Located right by the river, it offers a pleasant atmosphere and a menu focused on Maranhão’s regional cuisine. Shrimp dishes are among the favorites, and the place is perfect for dinner. We ordered the shrimp served inside a pineapple, a must-try dish for anyone visiting the Brazilian Northeast for the first time.

Where to eat in Atins

Atins is a charming village that still preserves a rustic and peaceful vibe. Though access is more limited, the reward is one of the most interesting gastronomic hubs in Maranhão. Here, restaurants blend naturally into sandy streets and cozy guesthouses.

Restaurante da Sesse

Famous among travelers, Restaurante da Sesse is a local reference for regional cuisine made with fresh ingredients. It’s a simple spot, best known for its grilled fish and traditional moquecas maranhenses (Maranhão-style stews). The atmosphere is modest, but the flavors are truly unforgettable.

Casa de Juja

With an intimate and refined atmosphere, Casa de Juja stands out in Atins for its creative dishes. The kitchen combines local ingredients with contemporary techniques, creating a unique gastronomic experience. The menu changes periodically to highlight seasonal produce. We ordered the Fisherman’s Skillet, a rich combination of risotto with shrimp and breaded fish bites.

Vila Buna: the best place to go out at night in Atins

If you’re looking for a place to spend the evening in Atins, Vila Buna is the perfect spot. The area brings together several restaurants, an artisanal pizzeria called Pipo.co, an ice cream shop, a craft store, and even a small gym. Pipo.co is famous for its long-fermentation Neapolitan-style pizzas — a great place to relax and unwind after a full day exploring the lagoons.
